Amman: The Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) and the National Center for Nuclear and Radiological Security have commenced their involvement in the “Dragon Eye” field exercise, which is a component of the Jordanian-American program aimed at countering weapons of mass destruction (CWMD), officials announced on Monday.
According to Jordan News Agency, the exercise is held in collaboration with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) of the U.S. Department of Energy. The National Center for Nuclear and Radiological Security (NCNRS) is overseeing the drill and coordinating the participation of Jordanian institutions alongside relevant national bodies.
EMRC Chairman and head of the NCNRS, Ziad Al-Saaydeh, stated on Tuesday that the two-day exercise is designed to enhance national preparedness and improve institutional coordination in managing potential nuclear security incidents. This initiative aligns with international standards and best practices concerning nuclear safety and security.
Al-Saaydeh noted that the commission’s involvement demonstrates its regulatory and supervisory responsibilities over the nuclear and radiological sector, as well as its dedication to maintaining the highest levels of readiness and effective response. He underscored the significance of collaboration among national institutions in safeguarding the populace and the environment while strengthening nuclear security within the kingdom.
He further mentioned that the EMRC, through the NCNRS and its specialized regulatory units, is actively working to develop technical and human capacity. The organization is training staff in partnership with local and international entities to ensure an effective response in emergency and exceptional situations.
