Cybersecurity Center Refutes Claims of Risks in Census Devices

Amman:The National Cybersecurity Center (NCSC) has firmly denied circulating allegations regarding cybersecurity threats linked to the tablet devices used in the 2026 General Population and Housing Census. The Center assured that all equipment underwent extensive technical inspections before being put into service.

According to Jordan News Agency, the NCSC responded to inquiries by confirming that the tablet devices, provided by the Central Statistical Organization in Iraq, were received over a year ago. Their arrival was publicly announced, and the devices were withheld from use in census operations until all necessary formalities and technical protocols were completed.

Upon their arrival, specialized official committees received the devices, which were then subjected to thorough evaluations by various regulatory bodies. These included the NCSC, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, the Jordan Customs Department, and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, each conducting assessments within their respective areas of authority.

The NCSC highlighted that the practice of sharing and reallocating data-collection hardware among national statistical agencies is common in international census management, aimed at optimizing resource use and technical efficiency. The tablets underwent comprehensive cybersecurity protocols, including factory resets and advanced scans, ensuring their integrity before activation.

Rumors about potential data breaches or privacy compromises were dismissed by the NCSC, which stated that these claims lack scientific or technical basis. The Center emphasized that governmental systems and databases are protected by robust security measures and regulatory frameworks, maintaining high standards of data protection.

The NCSC urged the public to be cautious of unverified reports and reiterated that official technical findings and regulatory assessments are the only reliable sources for evaluating the cybersecurity of national infrastructure.
