Course trains specialists on archaeological sites’ preservation techniques

A two-week training course on the preventive conservation of mosaics at archaeological sites was launched Monday in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Dana Firas, President of the Petra National Trust and the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Cultural Heritage.

The course, which brought together conservation and restoration experts, was held by the Department of Antiquities, in partnership with the Getty Conservation Institute and the International Center for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property. It focuses on two strategic and sustainable methods for preserving archaeological sites; protective shelters and reburial.

Participants in the course will learn complex techniques that can contribute to providing a more stable environment for vulnerable archaeological historical sites through a field visit to Jerash, Umm al-Rasas and Madaba, which feature marvelous mosaics.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Nayef Fayez, who patronized the launching ceremony of the first session, said that this course is an important opportunity to preserve the mosaics scattered across the Kingdom and to pass on the stories they tell to future generations.
