Colombia’s Embassy Opening in Jerusalem Criticized by Jerusalem Affairs Committee

Jerusalem:Jerusalem Affairs Committee Secretary-General Abdullah Kanaan has condemned Colombia's decision to open an embassy in Jerusalem, stating it undermines the city's legal and historical status.

According to Jordan News Agency, Kanaan emphasized that this move breaches international resolutions and the global stance, which do not recognize East Jerusalem's annexation and stress the importance of maintaining its status as part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.

Kanaan described Colombia's action as a deviation from international consensus against unilateral measures that could impact Jerusalem's final status. He further noted that it infringes on Palestinian national rights and violates international law and United Nations resolutions. The city, Kanaan stressed, holds significant religious, historical, and civilizational importance.

He asserted that the Palestinian cause is central to regional conflict resolution and that peace cannot be achieved without securing Palestinian rights, including an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Highlighting Jordan's role, Kanaan mentioned King Abdullah II's leadership in defending Jerusalem's holy sites and maintaining its Arab identity. He reaffirmed the importance of the Hashemite Custodianship over these sites and Jordan's commitment to their protection and accessibility.

Kanaan called on the international community to oppose actions undermining Jerusalem's status and adhere to United Nations resolutions. He concluded that safeguarding Jerusalem's identity and holy sites is a shared responsibility essential for lasting peace in the region.
