China develops underwater communication system for submarines

Chinese scientists have developed an underwater communication system for submarines in the South China Sea, which will support signals over a total area of more than 30,000 square kilometers.

According to South China Morning Post newspaper, the acoustic device picked up sound signals at a distance of 105 km at a depth of 200 meters, with a data transfer rate of almost 200 bits per second.

“This corresponds to the bandwidth of a very low-frequency radio that the naval command sends to nuclear submarines using huge ground antennas,” the newspaper explained, noting that despite the strong background noise, the encrypted messages did not contain errors.
