Cabinet reviews measures to implement King’s special pardon for lèse-majesté cases

A Cabinet session, chaired by Prime Minister Dr. Bisher Khasawneh, on Wednesday discussed the measures that have already been taken to implement the King’s directives to government to embark on procedures to issue a “special” pardon for persons convicted with lèse-majesté crimes and putting it into effect “as soon as possible.”

Speaking at the session, Minister of Justice, Ahmed Ziyadat, presented the “practical” steps that were taken to implement the King’s directives to issue a special pardon for those convicted in lèse-majesté cases.

Once the King’s directive was issued and the premier’s instructions to implement it “quickly, Ziyadat said the Ministry of Justice, in coordination with the Jordanian Judicial Council, began preparing lists for those involved in lèse-majesté cases.

Priority has been given to examine cases for those currently spending prion terms, he said, adding that a special pardon will be issued in this regard during the coming period, to release those convicted from the reform and rehabilitation centers.

On other lèse-majesté cases, he said warrants and subpoenas against those wanted to the Public Prosecution will be revoked.
