US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed with ousted President of Niger Mohamed Bazoum the developments in Niger.
"Spoke to Nigerian President Bazoum to express our continued efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the current constitutional crisis. The United States reiterates our call for the immediate release of him and his family," the US Secretary of State said Wednesday on X platform.
This comes after Blinken affirmed in a previous statement his country's support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger, stressing that they are working through diplomatic channels to support these efforts.
On July 28, General Abdul Rahman Chiani, commander of Niger's presidential guards, declared himself as ruler of Niger, two days after a coup against the elected president Mohamed Bazoum.
The military coup in Niger sparked angry international reactions amid warnings of the repercussions of this dangerous step on the security of the African Sahel region. (QNA)
