Arab League Calls for Middle East Free of Nuclear Weapons Amid Tensions

Amman: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has condemned Israel’s military campaign against Iran, warning that it disregards all efforts to reach a diplomatic resolution. Speaking at the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Aboul Gheit rejected the military targeting of any nuclear facilities, stressing the risks such actions pose to civilians in Iran and surrounding regions. He reiterated the longstanding Arab demand for a Middle East free of nuclear weapons.

According to Jordan News Agency, Aboul Gheit underscored the need for Israel to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), expressing confidence that a return to the negotiating table remains possible provided there is unified global political will, as was the case in previous attempts to resolve the Iranian nuclear crisis.

Aboul Gheit also highlighted the ongoing suffering of Palestinians, stating that the Israeli occupation continues to commit daily atrocities. He pointed to the killing of more than 140 Palestinians in a single day near food distribution centers, which he said have become “death traps” for civilians.

He urged the international community and the United Nations Security Council to take responsibility and act to stop the crimes, criticizing the continued use of the veto power to shield the Israeli occupation and allow further violations.
