Agriculture Sector Leads Economic Growth with Significant Gains

Amman:Agriculture Minister Saeb Khreisat announced that the agriculture sector recorded the highest growth rate among economic activities in the second quarter of 2026, highlighting its critical role in driving economic growth.

According to Jordan News Agency, figures from the Department of Statistics revealed that the sector grew by 7.8 percent at constant prices compared to the same period in 2025. The agriculture sector contributed 4.5 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), underlining its economic significance.

Khreisat attributed the sector's "outstanding" performance to successful government policies and collaboration with the private sector and farmers. These efforts aimed to enhance productivity, improve the efficiency of natural resource use, and expand export markets for Jordanian agricultural products.

The official data indicated that the national economy grew by 3 percent in the second quarter of 2026, up from 2.8 percent in the previous year, with agriculture leading the growth. The sector contributed 0.34 percentage points to the overall economic growth, second only to the manufacturing sector.

The positive outcomes are linked to the implementation of the Economic Modernization Vision and the 2026-2029 executive program, alongside ministry policies supporting agriculture and farmers. Initiatives such as the agricultural calendar and subsidized financing aim to encourage modern farming techniques, bolster agro-industries, and increase exports through air and sea transport.

Minister Khreisat committed to executing strategic plans to strengthen national food security and boost the competitiveness of Jordanian agricultural products in local and international markets. He emphasized the sector's achievements as a testament to its pivotal role in the Kingdom's economic growth amidst regional geopolitical challenges and food security issues.
