First Deputy Speaker Ayatollah Freihat Sets Parliamentary Priorities Post-Royal Speech

Amman:Newly elected First Deputy Speaker of the Lower House, Ayatollah Freihat, emphasized the importance of the key messages from the Speech from the Throne, describing them as essential guidelines and responsibilities for Parliament. During a session chaired by Speaker Ibrahim Tarawneh, Freihat urged lawmakers to enhance their performance to meet national aspirations and collaborate as a unified team, prioritizing the service of Jordan and its citizens.

According to Jordan News Agency, Freihat highlighted the political modernization process envisioned by King Abdullah II, which requires advanced political thinking, effective parliamentary practice, and the development of political parties. This process aims to translate programs into legislation that aligns with the aspirations of Jordanians and protects their interests.

Freihat also discussed the relationship with the government, stressing that it should be guided by national interests and performance standards. He pledged to support the government when it benefits the country but also to hold it accountable when necessary, ensuring transparency and responsible policies. Freihat emphasized that cooperation should not hinder oversight, and differing views within the House should be managed responsibly under the national interest umbrella.

Furthermore, Freihat committed to upholding lawmakers' rights to express their views and exercise independent judgment. He stressed the importance of consensus in Parliament, focusing on national priorities and the interests of Jordanians rather than positions or gains. Freihat, who secured 88 votes against MP Ahmad Al-Hmeisat's 46, expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in him and acknowledged the support from all colleagues, particularly the Labour Party.
