Accra:The Baptism Site of Jesus Christ, known as Al-Maghtas, has been declared a natural reserve, enhancing its status as a significant regional and international tourism destination. This designation integrates religious, cultural, and ecotourism by highlighting the site's biodiversity alongside its historical significance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Cabinet has approved adding Al-Maghtas to the national network of protected areas. It has been designated as a 10-square-kilometer natural reserve, with regulatory procedures underway in preparation for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ in 2030.
Hakam Shatnawi, a Professor of Tourism and Hospitality Management at Yarmouk University, stated that this strategic move strengthens the site's religious, historical, and global tourism standing. It also enhances environmental protection and biodiversity, providing a framework to regulate tourism activities and ensure sustainability. The timing coincides with preparations for the 2030 bicentennial, offering an opportunity to boost international promotion and solidify Jordan's position on the global religious tourism map.
Tourism investor Osama Abu Taleb highlighted that this initiative adds value to the tourism sector and local economy by combining environmental preservation with religious heritage. He emphasized the importance of a clear management plan to regulate visitor flows and investments, ensuring alignment with the site's carrying capacity. The reserve opens opportunities for sustainable tourism projects, such as visitor centers, nature trails, and local craft initiatives, thereby supporting local community development.
