Amman:Anti-begging committees at the Ministry of Social Development, alongside the Public Security Directorate (PSD), have apprehended a woman in Amman found with JD 3,313, which she had collected through street begging, as stated by the ministry.
According to Jordan News Agency, a background check on the woman revealed 18 previous police records, with 13 directly related to begging charges. Legal actions are underway to refer her to the appropriate authorities for further proceedings.
The Ministry of Social Development has urged citizens to refrain from giving donations directly to street beggars to help curb the practice and prevent the exploitation of vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Instead, it recommends directing charitable contributions through licensed organizations to ensure that funds are properly allocated to those in genuine need.
Highlighting the importance of collective action to address street begging, the ministry called on the public to report any incidents via its 24/7 hotline at 0793344330, which is accessible across all governorates.
The ministry also confirmed that joint enforcement campaigns with the PSD will persist throughout the Kingdom under current legislation to safeguard society and eliminate fraudulent claims of poverty.
