Amman:The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Jordan has signed a cooperation agreement with the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) to implement climate adaptation strategies aimed at addressing drought and water scarcity issues.
According to Jordan News Agency, the agreement is funded by the Government of Japan under the initiative "From Scarcity to Sustainability." It was signed by FAO Representative in Jordan Thaer Yaseen and NARC Acting Director General Zakaria Musallam.
The initiative is designed to assist drought-affected farming communities across Ajloun, Jerash, and the Northern Jordan Valley. The focus is on modernizing land and water management, enhancing institutional capacity, and introducing climate-smart farming solutions to strengthen Jordan's agricultural sector.
As part of the agreement, partners will conduct specialized training and develop field projects. These projects include sustainable beekeeping, drought-tolerant farming, organic composting using black soldier fly and worms, regenerative soil management, and nature-positive agricultural practices. A pilot training site will also be established at the Sharhabeel Bin Hasna Research Station for Sustainable Agriculture.
Yaseen emphasized the importance of practical, science-backed strategies in helping local farmers adapt to increasing climate pressures. Musallam highlighted the role of scientific research and innovation in protecting natural resources, ensuring food security, and supporting vulnerable rural communities.
