Amman:The Ministry of Water and Irrigation has entered into a 3.3 million euro (approximately JD2.7 million) consulting agreement with a consortium consisting of Germany's Fichtner Water and Transportation GmbH (FWT) and Jordan's Engicon. This deal aims to enhance biogas energy generation at wastewater treatment plants across Jordan.
According to Jordan News Agency, this agreement is part of Phase II of a results-based financing program supported by the KfW Development Bank. The overall initiative is backed by 20 million euros (approximately JD16.1 million) from German bilateral cooperation and a 10 million euro (approximately JD8.1 million) grant from the European Union.
The program's focus is on upgrading wastewater facilities in West Jerash, East Jerash, and Kufranja, as well as improving sludge treatment and biogas infrastructure. The project model involves the selected contractor handling construction, operations, and maintenance for 15 years, ensuring that design and execution contribute to long-term operational efficiency.
The project aims to generate clean electricity by capturing biogas during wastewater treatment, thereby reducing reliance on the grid, lowering operational costs, and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the improved effluent quality will provide a safe and sustainable water source for agricultural irrigation, helping to alleviate pressure on Jordan's traditional water resources.
Ministry officials emphasize that the initiative aligns with national priorities outlined in the Economic Modernization Vision (2026-2029), which seeks to enhance water security, expand resource reuse, and foster public-private partnerships.
