Amman: The Ministry of Water and Irrigation and the Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA-Jordan) have signed a memorandum of understanding to commence the fourth phase of the "Strengthening Local Sustainable Sanitation Systems in Jordan and Tajikistan" project. This initiative is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
According to Jordan News Agency, the ministry's Secretary-General Jihad Mahamid emphasized during the signing ceremony that the agreement is aimed at exchanging technical and scientific expertise between the parties. The focus areas include wastewater treatment, groundwater protection, and collaborative efforts to enhance local capacities to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
The memorandum also seeks to develop practical concepts and technical studies to address environmental and water challenges, with a particular emphasis on the decentralized wastewater management concept. Mahamid highlighted the project's objectives, which include consolidating institutional and technical knowledge, enhancing advocacy, supporting multi-sectoral cooperation, and promoting decentralized sanitation solutions.
The project will achieve these goals by building the capacity of stakeholders in the water and sanitation sector. This includes government institutions, academia, the private sector, operators, and civil society organizations, enabling them to plan, implement, and sustainably manage these solutions.
Laura Senge, a representative from BORDA, mentioned that two specialized events will be organized to encourage sectoral dialogue and develop recommendations for sector development. Furthermore, a specialized technical study will be prepared to find solutions for managing and treating industrial wastewater. A legislative proposal will also be drafted to update regulatory and operational frameworks for decentralized sanitation in the Kingdom.
