Amman: Amman has been officially listed on the global Quality of Life platform after achieving the Quality of Life Index, in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), said Yousef Shawarbeh, Mayor of Greater Amman Municipality.
According to Jordan News Agency, Shawarbeh stated that Amman ranked second among Arab cities and 10th globally out of 100 participating cities, based on internationally approved methodology and performance standards.
Shawarbeh highlighted the municipality's goal to position Amman as a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable city that ensures a high quality of life for all residents. He noted that the Quality of Life Index serves as a strategic evidence-based tool to assess residents' lived experiences and support the formulation of responsive and effective public policies.
He elaborated that the city's participation in the index aligns with strategic initiatives including the Amman Smoke-Free Initiative, the preparation of the city's Voluntary Local Review of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Green Activities - Participatory Greening of Neighborhoods initiative, urban agriculture projects, public transport development, the Greater Amman Municipality 2022-2026 Strategic Plan, the Amman Smart City strategy, digital transformation of municipal services, and the Amman Climate Action Plan.
Shawarbeh explained that the index integrates objective statistical indicators with residents' perceptions and satisfaction levels, combining global well-being benchmarks with locally tailored indicators reflecting Amman's development context and strategic priorities.
He mentioned that the implementation phases included signing the accession agreement in November 2024, developing global and local indicators, designing and launching a comprehensive citywide survey to measure public satisfaction with services, the built environment, mobility, and socio-economic well-being, and conducting data analysis in coordination with UN-Habitat to ensure methodological rigor and compliance with international standards. The process concluded with the official publication of Amman's index results on the global platform.
He added that these efforts are part of the municipality's broader agenda on sustainable urban planning, digital transformation, climate action, and service quality enhancement, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities.
The municipality stated that Amman's official inclusion on the global platform strengthens its capacity to prioritize development objectives, improve public service delivery, enhance institutional efficiency, and advance long-term, sustainable urban growth, further consolidating the city's standing among global cities committed to improving residents' quality of life.
