Transport System Recognized as Key Driver of Jordan’s Economy, Says Minister

Amman: Minister of State for Economic Affairs Muhannad Shehadeh highlighted that Jordan’s transport system is a crucial component of the national economy and serves as a significant catalyst for growth under the Economic Modernization Vision (EMV).

According to Jordan News Agency, Shehadeh emphasized the priority given to transport projects within the vision, which is championed by His Majesty King Abdullah II, due to their direct impact on the economy and citizens. During a session focused on transport and logistics at the Prime Ministry, which is part of the preparations for the second executive program of the vision for 2026-2029, Shehadeh stressed the importance of transport schemes that enhance the quality and efficiency of services for the public.

Shehadeh discussed the Alternative Roads Project, aimed at creating modern, safe routes that comply with global standards. This initiative is expected to reduce congestion, save time, and lower costs, enhancing comfort and safety for commuters. The minister mentioned significant planned projects, such as the Sweileh-Naour bridge, Shidiya-Aqaba and Aqaba-Ghor Safi railway lines, improved inter-governorate transport, and the rehabilitation of Marka Airport. These projects are attracting investor interest and are progressing well.

The Economic Modernization Vision is described as a cross-government strategy, with ongoing commitment from the government demonstrated by the sectoral workshops for the second phase of the executive program. Shehadeh highlighted the vital role of the private sector in realizing the vision, noting the collaboration between government and private enterprises.

In the second phase of the program, several initiatives and projects are planned that will directly impact citizens’ well-being. These initiatives will be designed to be measurable, time-bound, and feasible. Public capital expenditure is set at 1.7 billion dinars, with the government aiming for full disbursement of this allocation.

Regarding specific projects, Shehadeh noted that a feasibility study for the Sweileh-Naour bridge has been completed, attracting investor interest. For the railway line connecting Aqaba with Shidiya and Ghor Safi, approximately 80% of the agreements have been finalized, marking it as strategically important for Jordan. The rehabilitation work on Marka Airport is advancing, with expectations of reopening soon.
