House Committee Engages with WFD on Waste Management Legislation Impact

Amman: The Lower House Environment and Climate Committee, chaired by MP Jihad Abawi, recently convened with representatives from the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) to deliberate on a study assessing the legislative impact of the 2020 Framework Law for Waste Management. This meeting was a component of the committee's ongoing efforts to monitor environmental legislation and evaluate its effectiveness.

According to Jordan News Agency, Abawi emphasized the MPs' focus on environmental issues, rooted in their legislative and oversight responsibilities. He advocated for the development of the environmental legislative framework to align with current developments and bolster environmental protection. The committee plans to hold further discussions to monitor the legislative impact of the law and engage with various stakeholders to refine relevant legislation and adopt best practices in waste management.

Committee members highlighted the increasing parliamentary interest in environmental issues, urging for the enactment of legislation to regulate the sector and fortify the environmental protection system. They stressed the importance of developing a national strategy aimed at establishing an integrated waste database and promoting recycling processes, contributing to sustainable waste management and enhancing environmental security.

WFD Representatives provided an overview of the 2020 Framework Law for Waste Management, noting the Ministry of Environment's role in providing the legal framework and the complementary roles of other ministries and institutions, including the Ministries of Health and Interior.
