UN Chief Appoints Spain’s Moratinos as Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia

Amman: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres on Wednesday appointed Miguel angel Moratinos of Spain as the UN’s Special Envoy to Combat Islamophobia, in addition to his current role as High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations.

According to Jordan News Agency, Guterres stated that the dual appointment is aimed at maximizing existing capacities and resources while integrating the new mandate’s responsibilities into the ongoing work of the Alliance.

Since 2019, Moratinos has led the UN Alliance of Civilizations, promoting its role as a global platform for dialogue and bridge-building among cultures.

The Secretary-General noted that Moratinos has worked closely with the UN throughout his diplomatic career, particularly in matters related to the Middle East, Africa, and Europe. As Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (2004-2010), he oversaw his country’s presidencies of the UN Security Council, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, and the EU Council.

Guterres added that Moratinos has long been a strong advocate for effective multilateralism, the Alliance of Civilizations, and the Friends of UN Reform group. He also played a key role in launching innovative development, healthcare, and women’s programs within the UN system, helping to double Spain’s official development assistance.
