Muscat: United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres on Monday urged India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any military confrontations that could spiral out of control. “This is a time for pulling back from the brink,” Guterres said in a press briefing, expressing deep concern over the growing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
According to Jordan News Agency, Guterres emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “It is painful to see relations reaching a boiling point.” He stressed that a military solution is not viable and highlighted the importance of both countries engaging in diplomatic efforts to resolve their differences peacefully.
Guterres reiterated the UN’s readiness to support any initiative that promotes de-escalation, diplomacy, and renewed commitment to peace. He offered the organization’s good offices to facilitate dialogue between India and Pakistan, underscoring the UN’s role in fostering stability in the region.
The Secretary-General’s comments come amid increasing concerns from the international community about the potential for conflict between the two nations. His call for restraint aims to encourage both parties to prioritize dialogue over confrontation in resolving their disputes.
