Food Prices Remain Stable with Some Decreases, Says Minister Qudah

Amman: Minister of Industry, Trade and Supply, Yarub Qudah, announced on Thursday that most food prices remain “stable” in the local market, with certain items experiencing a clear decrease.

According to Jordan News Agency, during an inspection tour of Amman’s markets and shopping centers, Qudah highlighted the ministry’s ongoing “intensive” monitoring campaigns across the country. The ministry is prepared to implement “necessary” measures to control any unwarranted price spikes. While there have been temporary increases in a “limited” number of commodities, specifically chicken products due to “high” demand, prices have “gradually” decreased in all governorates.

Qudah further mentioned that prices for “a few” types of vegetables, such as cucumbers and zucchini, saw a spike due to “small” production and supply quantities. These prices, however, have since returned to normal levels. He emphasized the “keenness” of both public and private sectors to bolster food stocks and meet “high” demand during Ramadan. The stock of basic food commodities is reportedly “sufficient for periods exceeding safe limits.”

The government is also taking proactive steps to reduce inflationary pressures and stabilize market goods. Qudah stated that this policy aims to lower costs for the private sector, notably by reducing storage fees at Jordan Silos and Supply General Company by up to 40%.

Additionally, the government has exempted imported goods from shipping fees and taxes and has restricted the export and re-export of basic food commodities and other items to ensure stable supply within the country.
