4.5-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Southwest Marrakesh, Morocco

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale struck southwest Marrakesh, southern Morocco.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported that the earthquake occurred 88 kilometers from Marrakesh at a depth of 77 kilometers.

The National Institute of Geophysics of the National Center for Scientific and Technical Research in Morocco announced Friday night a 7-magnitude earthquake struck parts of southwest Marrakesh, at a depth of about 8 kilometers, killing and injuring thousands of people and destroying buildings and property in several villages, Moroccan cities. Residents of major cities were forced to flee their homes.

In the latest toll of earthquake victims, the Moroccan Ministry of Interior stated in a statement that the latest toll reached 2,012 deaths and 2,059 injuries,1,404 of which are serious injuries.
