2nd phase of COVID-19 Youth Volunteers’ Taskforce launched

The 2nd phase of COVID-19 Youth Volunteers’ Taskforce, which was established by the Ministry of Interior, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Jordan and with the support of the Government of Norway, began Thursday.

Under the initiative, sixty young men and women participated in this phase, representing Irbid, Mafraq and Ajloun, governorates, as the team will work with local communities to increase vaccination rate and raise awareness of preventive measures to curb the Covid-19 pandemic in the Kingdom.

Addressing the participants, Director of Local Development at Ministry of Interior, Mohammad Sarhan, highlighted the ministry’s plan to prepare the field youth team, adding that this initiative comes within the framework of national efforts aimed at eliminating the pandemic, and falls within the ministry’s priorities to support and encourage youth to get involved in national initiatives.

Lauding support offered by UNDP and Government of Norway for this initiative, Sarhan also commended efforts made by the Ministry of Digital Economy and the Royal Health Awareness Society (RHAS) in this regard.

Director of External Relations at UNDP, Diana Jraisat, said the UNDP supports policies and projects concerned with promoting civic and political participation for young people to become partners in decision-making at the national and local levels.

Jraisat also referred to the Network of Local Government project, supported by the Government of Norway, in partnership with UNDP, aims to support transparency and accountability, enhance community communication at the local level, and link decision makers with youth and local communities.

For her part, RHAS representative, Dr. Samiha Thneibat, presented the society’s vision and mission and the training program that will be presented by the RHAS trainers during the training workshop.

The initiative aims at establishing a taskforce of 240 well trained, qualified men and women Youth Volunteers from the kingdom’s governorates and Youth Volunteers will accompany the Ministry of Interior’s inspection teams deployed in the field to encourage people to register for the COVID-19 vaccinations as well as raise awareness on other related preventative measures.
