BRESCIA, Italy, June 13, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The countdown is almost over. The 1000 Miglia returns, 17-21 June with an eight-shaped route inspired by the epic pre-war editions, linking the eastern Adriatic and western Tyrrhenian coasts, besides the Brescia-Rome route and return.

1900 km and 5 racing days for the 420 jewels of the world’s only travelling museum. After leaving Viale Venezia in Brescia, the first leg will end in San Lazzaro di Savena (Bologna). On Wednesday, the cars will arrive in the capital, then, returning north, the third leg will end in Cervia-Milano Marittima. On Friday, the crews will cross Italy from east to west: reaching the Tyrrhenian Sea, the passage through the Naval Academy in Livorno will seal the partnership with the Italian Navy, showing the collaboration and closeness that the Armed Forces and Police have always reserved for the 1000 Miglia. In Parma, the conclusion of the fourth leg will precede the grand finale on Saturday 21st: from midday, the cars will return to Viale Venezia before waving goodbye to the public in Piazza Vittoria with a parade in the festive Festa della Musica atmosphere.

The 1000 Miglia 2025 convoy will be preceded by 123 Ferraris from the Tribute 1000 Miglia and 1000 Miglia Green electric cars, accompanied by the Politecnico di Milano’s robo-driven cars. The project focuses on the introduction of autonomous driving for optimising urban transport.

The pre-race programme will start on Sunday 15 June with the inauguration of the 1000 Miglia Village in the historic setting of Piazza Vittoria: children from the “La 1000 Miglia goes to school” project will decorate the car dedicated to the initiative, travelling behind the convoy. The days will be entertained by Radio Deejay voices, whose official presenters will take turns along the route, recounting the race with their usual enthusiasm. The first edition of Talk 1000 Forme-Designed to win at the Teatro Grande and the preview screening of the film Fury&The Monster at the UNESCO site of the S.Giulia Museum will feature on Monday, while in the Village in Piazza Vittoria the cars will parade for the sealing ceremony.

The 1000 Miglia Charity Car, with La Zebra Onlus, will raise public awareness of the purchase of a latest-generation ultrasound scanner to be donated to the Children’s Hospital in Brescia.

International Pro-Palestinian Activists Halted in Libya and Egypt During Gaza March

Cairo: Pro-Palestinian activists aiming to march to Gaza in an effort to break Israel’s blockade on the territory were stopped on Friday in both Libya and Egypt, according to organizers. Forty participants of the Global March to Gaza had their passports confiscated at a checkpoint while departing Cairo, organizers reported in a statement. These individuals are reportedly being held in the heat without permission to move, with an additional 15 being detained at hotels.

According to Nam News Network, video footage later emerged showing Egyptian security forces intervening to disperse impromptu sit-ins. Disturbingly, the footage depicted women being mistreated and forcibly carried onto buses, as shared by Florence Heskia, one of the protesters stranded en route. Another activist, Nadia, disclosed that their passports were seized, and they are being coerced to board buses destined for the airport for deportation.

The Global March to Gaza had previously announced that approximately 4,000 participants from over 4
0 countries would convene in Cairo on Friday, intending to proceed to the war-torn Palestinian territory. Their plan included traveling by bus to El-Arish in the heavily fortified Sinai Peninsula, followed by a 50-kilometer walk to the Gaza border. The group planned to camp there before returning to Cairo on June 19.

Separately, the Soumoud convoy, meaning ‘steadfastness’ in Arabic, which originated in Tunisia, was halted on Friday morning at the entrance to the Libyan city of Sirte, under the control of military leader Khalifa Haftar. Tunisian organizer Wael Naouar shared in a Facebook video that the convoy, comprising around a thousand activists from Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania, required authorization from Egyptian authorities to proceed to Gaza. Naouar noted the uncertainty surrounding their passage, with conflicting reports from security officials regarding Egypt’s stance on their entry.

Amid heavy security presence, one individual was arrested in central Cairo on Friday as activists attem
pted to gather. On Thursday, the Global March to Gaza organizers revealed that Egyptian authorities had detained over 200 activists in Cairo, with some being deported and others released. Hichem Al Ghaoui, a Global March coordinator, expressed surprise at the level of violence encountered, detailing the arrests, deportations, and threats faced by participants.

On Wednesday, Egypt’s foreign ministry stated its support for efforts to pressure Israel but emphasized that any delegations visiting the border area must secure approval through official channels.

Azerbaijan’s Tourism Push Amid Closed Borders and Economic Disparities

Baku: Azerbaijan’s state tourism agency is on a mission to boost the country’s travel appeal despite ongoing challenges. The initiative launched earlier this year reflects the government’s longstanding strategy of using grand events to enhance its image internationally. Hosting events like the Eurovision song contest, Formula 1 races, and the European Games has been part of this strategy.

According to Global Voices, the agency’s recent allocation of AZN 135,039.37 (USD 79,000) to VATA, a limited liability company, was aimed at organizing trips for 30 guests, including journalists and tourism companies from South Korea and Israel. This spending comes as Azerbaijan’s land borders remain closed since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, initially due to health concerns and later attributed to national security.

The ongoing border closure has restricted low-cost travel options for average-income Azerbaijani citizens, preventing them from accessing affordable tourism options abroad. Additionally, the cost of staying a
t local resorts remains high for many residents. With prices at mid-range hotels between AZN 60-80 per night (USD 35-47), and budget guesthouses at AZN 30-40 (USD 17-23), luxury resorts are even more expensive, making domestic tourism largely inaccessible.

While the monthly minimum wage in Azerbaijan is AZN 400 (USD 235) as of January 1, 2025, the average monthly salary stands at AZN 1043 (USD 613). However, the median income is lower at AZN 1009 (USD 594), highlighting significant income inequality which affects many citizens’ ability to afford leisure travel.

International visitors may not be aware of these economic challenges or the country’s political climate when they visit. According to local human rights groups, Azerbaijan faces issues with political prisoners, corruption, and a lack of freedom, negatively impacting its rankings on democracy and freedom indexes. Reporters Without Borders recently ranked Azerbaijan 167th out of 180 countries, and Freedom House described the nation as having a consolid
ated authoritarian regime.

While promoting tourism is not inherently problematic, the contrast between the country’s public image and its internal challenges suggests a more complex situation. Public relations efforts may not fully address or reflect the realities faced by Azerbaijani citizens.
