WTO: Tourism Initiative, a Model for Developing Tourism Sector

The UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has praised the Ministry of Tourism’s initiative in the Kingdom for tourism education called “School Enrichment Programs”, which will be part of the curriculum and which is regarded as an example and model of exploring students’ professional inclinations and enhancing their desire to join the tourism sector.

The UNWTO is dedicated to including tourism as a subject in the secondary school stage; it has highlighted the Saudi ministry’s initiative as a gradual approach that can be used as a model for UNWTO member states. According to the education bulletin, integrating tourism as a subject at secondary school level can help achieve many goals, including contributing to economic and cultural prosperity, developing career paths, and developing students’ basic skills and competencies.

The tourism education initiative aims to raise students’ awareness and direct them toward tourism education. The initiative is being implemented in cooperation with four international schools: King Abdulaziz Model Schools in Tabuk, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology Schools, Al-Kifah Schools in Al-Ahsa, and Camp Entertainment. It is bound to raise the students’ level of knowledge in local tourist areas and promote the Kingdom as a tourist destination.
