Washington, London ban importing aluminum, copper, nickel from Moscow

The United States and Britain have imposed a ban on importing aluminum, copper and nickel metals of Russian origin.

The US Treasury Department said in a statement that these minerals are prohibited from being imported into the United States, except ‘what is stipulated by law or determined by licensing.’

The statement explained that these restrictions do not affect aluminum, copper and nickel from Russia, which were produced before April 13, 2024.

For its part, the British government said that it would prevent Britons and non-British residents of the United Kingdom from purchasing a security on the International Metals Exchange for Russian metals that were produced after April 12.

Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov commented on the joint American-British decision, stressing that it was ‘another unjustified and politicized step.’

Antonov added banning the import of these minerals from Russia ‘is not just a bullet in the leg, but rather random shooting,’ suggesting that ‘the American de
cision is based on calculations that resource prices will not rise significantly in the United States itself.’

He explained that the US administration ‘easily creates imbalances in the performance of global markets,’ by involving its affiliated countries in the sanctions, stressing that Washington ‘frames its illegal steps as an attempt to appear as the leader in deterring Russia, and obstructing our successes in the special military operation in Ukraine.’
