Amman: The General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions (GFJTU) said Saturday that enhancing women’s economic participation and empowerment in the labor market needs a safe and decent work environment in line with local legislation and international conventions, to rein in high unemployment rates among women and enhance their role in a sustainable development process.
According to Jordan News Agency, in a press statement to mark International Women’s Day today, GFJTU president Khaled Fanatseh said celebration of the occasion this year coincides with the passage of amended labor legislation to safeguard working women’s rights and improve the work environment.
Women face multiple economic challenges and hurdles to access the labor market and engage in the comprehensive development process, he said, urging job-creation and equal gender opportunities to curb unemployment, particularly among women.
The federation seeks to improve labor conditions and achieve new gains for their workers, both men and women, in addition to integrating women’s rights into its labor demands and agreements with employers, he said.
Fanatseh stressed that GFJTU, through its strategic plan that runs until 2027, is committed to activating women’s role in union work, developing their skills and enhancing their participation.
