UNESCO Executive Council unanimously adopts resolution on Old City of Jerusalem, its walls

The UNESCO Executive Council on Wednesday unanimously adopted a resolution No. 214 on the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ambassador Haitham Al Foul, said that the adoption of the resolution is a result of a Jordanian diplomatic effort in coordination with Palestinian officials and Arab and Islamic groups in the UN organization.

He explained that the resolution and its annexes confirm all aspects of the Jordanian position regarding the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls, including Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The resolution, Al Foul added, reaffirms that all Israeli measures aimed at changing the nature and legal status of the Holy City are null and void, and calls upon Israel to stop its violations and illegal unilateral measures against the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram al-Sharif, the Old City of Jerusalem and its walls.

This decision also reaffirms the previous twenty-one Executive Council decisions, and the eleven World Heritage Committee decisions on Jerusalem, all of which expressed regret as a result of Israel’s non-compliance, as the occupying Power, to halt the excavation, tunneling and all illegal activities in Eastern Jerusalem, according to the international law rules, Al Foul explained.

Abu Al Foul indicated that the decision consolidated gains achieved in previous decisions, in particular confirming the naming of the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque / Al-Haram Al-Quds Al-Sharif as synonymous with one meaning. It also called for the urgent appointment of a permanent representative of the UNESCO Director-General in the Old City of Jerusalem to monitor all procedures within the organization’s mandate, and dispatching an interactive monitoring mission from UNESCO to Jerusalem to monitor all violations committed by Israel, the occupying power, under the international law.
