Tripoli: The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) voiced deep concern on Tuesday over the worsening security situation in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. UN spokesperson St©phane Dujarric reported that intense clashes involving heavy weaponry were taking place in densely populated civilian areas, raising alarm over the safety of non-combatants.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Mission called on all parties involved in the conflict to immediately cease hostilities and restore calm, underscoring the obligation to protect civilians at all times under international humanitarian law.
UNSMIL stressed that attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure may constitute war crimes, and reiterated its full support for the efforts of community elders and local leaders working to de-escalate the current tensions.
