UN Security Council holds urgent meeting on confrontations in Jerusalem

The UN Security Council on Monday held an urgently meeting to discuss the confrontations in Jerusalem between Palestinians, owners of the land and the identity, the Israeli occupation forces and the settlers, according to the “New York Times”.

“Discussions will continue on a text that is expected to be softened compared to the initial document that Norway proposed to the fifteen members of the Security Council that Tunisia called on to convene. The draft declaration, which was submitted jointly by Tunisia and China, called for “Israel to stop the settlement activities, attacks, demolitions and expulsions” against Palestinians “including in East Jerusalem,” according to internal sources in the council.

The document included the Council’s expression of “grave concern about the escalation of tensions and acts of violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem,” where the confrontations left hundreds of people injured, stressing “the importance of (all parties) to refrain from taking unilateral measures that exacerbate tensions and undermine the ability of implementing the two-state solution.”

The proposed document also called for “restraint and refraining from all (inciting) provocation and rhetoric, and preserving and respecting the historical status quo in the holy sites.”

During the closed-door video conference, the United States made it clear to its partners that it was “working behind the scenes” to calm the situation and “is not sure whether to issue an announcement or send a public message at this stage,” a diplomat said.
