UN Security Council Discusses Iran Nuclear File Amidst Sanctions Dispute

New york: The United Nations Security Council held a meeting on Tuesday focusing on Iran's nuclear file, where members received a briefing from Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs.

According to Jordan News Agency, DiCarlo emphasized that achieving a negotiated settlement, which would ensure a peaceful Iranian nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions, remains the optimal path for the international community. She highlighted that despite significant differences among the involved parties regarding the implementation of Security Council resolution 2231 (2015) and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, there is a persistent emphasis on the importance of a diplomatic resolution, with parties expressing a general willingness to engage in dialogue.

DiCarlo also pointed out the activation of the "snapback mechanism." She explained that since the Council did not pass a resolution to extend the termination of sanctions within 30 days following a letter from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action commitments, previous sanctions on Iran were reinstated on September 27, 2025. She further reported that several member states have contested the validity and effectiveness of this reimposition process, with some specifically arguing that the process was both procedurally and legally flawed.
