New york: UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock has brought attention to the dire situation faced by children in Gaza, who have been living under constant fear for over 700 days due to the enduring Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Baerbock emphasized that the conflict cannot be resolved through “an endless war, permanent occupation, and repeated terror,” and advocated for a two-state solution as the only way to ensure a future where Palestinians and Israelis can live “in peace, security, and dignity.”
According to Jordan News Agency, Baerbock delivered her remarks at the High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution. During the conference, she highlighted the significance of the New York Declaration, which was endorsed by 142 member states. This declaration represents the international community’s commitment to a two-state solution, laying out “concrete, time-bound, irreversible steps to achieve it, with readiness to take decisive measures and provide international guarantees.”
Baerbock underscored the severe impact of the conflict on children in Gaza, many of whom have lived in fear for more than 700 days. She made it clear that the calls for peace and a two-state solution are not abstract concepts for those affected by the conflict. She pointed to the real-life consequences, such as rockets destroying schools, families anxiously awaiting news about their children, UN staff witnessing colleagues being shot, and individuals suffering injuries or trauma. Baerbock concluded by stating that while achieving peace is a challenging task, it remains a moral obligation for the international community.
