UN demands additional funding for Afghanistan, warns of ‘humanitarian catastrophe’

The United Nations Tuesday issued an urgent appeal for $200 million in additional humanitarian aid for Afghanistan after “obstacles emerged” following the Taliban takeover in the war-ravaged country.

The New York Times, citing the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), reported that $606 million is now needed for Afghanistan until the end of the year in order to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.

OCHA spokesman Jens Laerke warned that food in Afghanistan is about to run out and basic services are collapsing, adding that aid can save lives.

Last week, the OCHA expressed hope that world nations would make generous pledges to provide much-needed food and humanitarian assistance for more than 11 million people, and essential health services to 3.4 million.

Emergency aid to Afghanistan will be discussed at a ministerial meeting in Geneva on Monday, which will be hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
