UN chief calls for immediate stop to aggression against Gaza

Amman: UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres said that “the Middle East is a tinderbox” and urged action to prevent spillover across the region.

Speaking at the third summit of the Group of 77 (G-77) and China, which opened in Kampala, Uganda, on Sunday, Guterres again stressed the need for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and access for humanitarian aid.

“The wholesale destruction of Gaza and the number of civilian casualties in such a short period are totally unprecedented during my mandate,” the Secretary-General said, noting that the UN has also been affected as 152 staff have been killed.

He went on to say that the situation in Gaza is heartbreaking and totally unacceptable, emphasizing that the continual rejection of a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians is completely unacceptable.

He underscored that denying the Palestinian people’s right to establish a state would prolong the war indefinitely, posing a significant threat to global peace and security.
