Aqaba: The United Nations announced the appointment of Christian Saunders as Acting Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from April 1 through June 30. This decision follows the conclusion of Philippe Lazzarini's term as Commissioner-General.
According to Jordan News Agency, the UN has also decided to appoint Saunders as Commissioner-General ad interim, commencing on July 1 until further notice. In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his appreciation for Lazzarini's dedicated service and commitment to UNRWA and the well-being of Palestinian refugees.
Guterres also reaffirmed his support and appreciation for UNRWA staff, recognizing their vital work in health, education, and humanitarian assistance under challenging conditions. He emphasized the importance of continued commitment by member states and other partners to support UNRWA and its services in the volatile region.
