Transport Ministry Expands E-Tracking System to Mitigate Environmental Impact

Amman: The Ministry of Transport has initiated an expansion of its electronic tracking system to encompass vehicles and machinery that have significant environmental and economic impacts, as announced by Minister Nidal Katamine.

According to Jordan News Agency, one of the primary projects progressing towards full implementation involves the tracking of wastewater tankers. This initiative, which recently gained cabinet approval, is set for a nationwide rollout following a successful pilot in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. It is operated by the Environment Ministry and funded by the Environmental Protection Fund, with the objective of reducing pollution resulting from the random disposal of wastewater.

Additionally, Katamine noted that the Agriculture Ministry has started a project to track vehicles transporting organic fertilizers to address fly infestations in the Jordan Valley. Tracking devices have been installed on select vehicles to evaluate the system technically before a wider implementation.

In a related effort, the Water Authority has issued a tender for a project to monitor private drilling rigs to manage their movements and prevent unauthorized drilling in water-sensitive regions. This initiative is a component of a national strategy to safeguard groundwater from over-extraction and contamination.

Katamine emphasized that the Transport Ministry remains committed to supporting and coordinating these initiatives in a regulatory capacity. Meanwhile, the responsible agencies oversee their implementation and technical follow-up. He also mentioned that additional sectors are being considered for inclusion in the system, aligning with government goals to optimize resources, enhance governance, and prevent violations.
