Transport Minister Collaborates with European Experts on Jordan’s Maritime Strategy

Amman: Minister of Transport Wissam Tahtamouni and experts from the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), Fabrizio Perelli and Norm Erik, engaged in discussions regarding the advancement of Jordan’s national maritime strategy and the enhancement of its maritime sector.

According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting, which included the presence of Jordan Maritime Commission (JMC) Director General Omar Dabbas, highlighted the efficiency of the Jordanian maritime sector in recent years. Minister Tahtamouni emphasized its crucial role in the national economy and its function in connecting Jordan to global markets. The minister acknowledged the strong partnership with the European Union, appreciating EMSA’s technical support in developing Jordan’s maritime transport sector.

The meeting underscored the visit of the EMSA experts as a significant opportunity for exchanging expertise and aligning efforts to implement international best practices. The discussions focused on feasible policies for the forthcoming national strategy and the broader objectives the government aims to achieve. The importance of technical cooperation to devise a comprehensive and sustainable maritime strategy was a central theme.

Fabrizio Perelli remarked on the cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and the JMC as a constructive model for enhancing maritime safety in the region. He noted that the presence of EMSA experts in Jordan aims to assist in developing an effective maritime strategy that complies with international standards, benefiting both Jordan and the surrounding region. He also highlighted the SAFEMED V project, a key EuroMed maritime safety initiative supporting Mediterranean countries in meeting International Maritime Organization requirements.

Norm Erik highlighted the Transport Ministry’s pivotal role and the coordination efforts of relevant institutions in developing a comprehensive and feasible strategy. He mentioned that field meetings would be held in Aqaba with stakeholders to discuss implementation plans and technical matters related to the strategy.
