Merowe: The Sudanese army announced it successfully thwarted a drone attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting strategic locations, including an airport and a dam, in northern Sudan.
According to Anadolu Agency, the army’s 19th Infantry Division reported that its ground forces intercepted several suicide drones launched by the RSF on Thursday morning. The drones aimed at the division’s headquarters, Merowe Airport, and the Merowe Dam in the Northern State. Witnesses informed local Sudan News about heavy explosions near the airport and dam, though the extent of damage remains unknown.
There has been no response from the RSF regarding the army’s statement. Al-Rakoba News, referring to local sources, mentioned that the attack also included the state capital Dongola and the city of Al-Dabba.
Merowe is a significant strategic area in northern Sudan, featuring an airport used for military and civilian purposes and the Merowe Dam, one of the country’s major infrastructure projects. The RSF’s recent seizure of El-Fasher, the North Darfur State’s capital, has expanded clashes with the Sudanese army to new locations, notably the central and southern Kordofan states.
Of Sudan’s 18 states, the RSF now controls all five in the Darfur region, except for a few northern areas of North Darfur where the army is still in charge. The Sudanese army maintains control over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital, Khartoum, across the south, north, east, and central regions.
The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the army and the RSF, has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions.
