Smell of death is everywhere in northern Gaza, says UNRWA chief

The smell of death is everywhere in northern Gaza due to three weeks of continuous shelling by Israeli forces on the area, the Commissioner-General of the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, said on Tuesday.

“The smell of death is everywhere as bodies are left lying on roads or under rubble,” Lazzarini said in a statement published by the UN, adding that ‘missions to retrieve bodies or provide humanitarian assistance are denied by the occupying forces.

“In northern Gaza, people are waiting for death, feeling abandoned, hopeless and alone: “They live from hour to hour, fearing death every second.

“Our staff report that they cannot find food, water or medical care,” he continued, noting that “throughout the war last year, some UNRWA staff remained in the north and did the impossible in order to provide assistance to the displaced, and we kept some of our shelters open despite heavy shelling and attacks on our buildings.”
