Geneva: Senate President Faisal Fayez chaired part of a general debate at the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme “Upholding Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis.”
According to Jordan News Agency, the session featured statements from multiple parliamentary speakers and heads of consultative and upper houses, who shared their countries’ and parliaments’ perspectives on issues related to international parliamentary and humanitarian work. The discussions also focused on ongoing global conflicts and disputes, exploring how parliaments could contribute to resolving these issues through peaceful solutions grounded in international legitimacy, United Nations charters, and international humanitarian law.
On the sidelines of the IPU Conference, Fayez engaged in separate meetings with several heads and representatives from parliamentary, consultative, and upper houses of brotherly and friendly nations. These meetings aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in political, economic, investment, and parliamentary fields, focusing on building upon these ties to serve common interests.
Fayez held talks with Moroccan House of Councillors President Mohamed Ould Rachid, Egyptian House of Representatives Speaker Hanafi Gebali, Bahraini House of Representatives Speaker Ahmed bin Salman Al-Musallam, Omani Shura Council Chairman Khalid bin Hilal Al-Maawali, Algerian Council of the Nation Speaker Azzouz Nasri, and a parliamentary delegation from the British Houses of Commons and Lords.
The discussions also covered the current regional situation, particularly the Palestinian cause, stressing the need for Israel to comply fully with all terms of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Participants underscored the importance of adherence to the ceasefire agreement at every stage, considering it crucial for achieving stability in the Middle East and ending regional conflicts.
Talks further emphasized maintaining calm in the West Bank and Jerusalem and rejecting any unilateral Israeli actions, cautioning that such measures could lead to a serious escalation threatening regional and international peace and stability.
The meetings highlighted the necessity of bolstering humanitarian response efforts in Gaza and ensuring sufficient aid delivery to alleviate the catastrophic effects of Israeli aggression while preventing Israel from blocking humanitarian assistance.
Fayez underscored the extensive efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II in promoting regional peace and stability, highlighting his leadership in mobilizing international efforts to sustain the Gaza ceasefire and create a political pathway to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ensuring the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
In discussions on regional peace efforts, participants reaffirmed support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty, called for an end to Israeli attacks on Syrian lands, and demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all occupied Syrian territories.
The meetings saw participation from Senators Mohammed Al-Ississ, Hael Obeidat, Mohasen Al-Jaghoub, Asia Yaghi, and Ammar Al-Qudah, alongside Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Switzerland, Ambassador Akram Harahsheh.
