Senate Panel Reviews “Guardian of Generations” Initiative to Curb Antibiotic Misuse

Amman: The Senate's Health, Environment and Population Committee, led by Senator Yassin Hasban, convened to discuss the "Guardian of Generations" initiative, which targets antibiotic misuse and aims to enhance efforts against antimicrobial resistance.

According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting involved key stakeholders including the Pan Arab Women Physicians Association, Royal Medical Services, Jordan Medical Association, Jordan Food and Drug Administration, World Health Organization, and association members.

Senator Hasban highlighted antimicrobial resistance as a significant public health challenge, cautioning against its potential to become a leading cause of mortality. He pointed out that overprescription and misconceptions about antibiotics contribute to this issue, emphasizing the necessity of enhancing regulatory oversight and the role of healthcare professionals in ensuring correct usage.

The initiative seeks collaboration with the Ministry of Health and professional bodies to launch national programs centered on awareness, precise diagnosis, and prescription adherence. Director Sahel Hammouri of the Royal Medical Services detailed the implementation of international treatment standards and the introduction of a specialised field with a board examination to boost medical competence. This includes protocols for antibiotic use integrated into the "Hakeem" health information system.

Professional associations expressed their willingness to collaborate under a unified framework to promote behavioral and cultural change concerning antibiotic use. Rana Obeidat of the Jordan Food and Drug Administration emphasized translating the initiative into practical measures, citing regional recognition and training roles.
