Senate panel discusses cooperation prospects with Russian envoy

The Senate’s Jordanian-Russian Friendship Committee, headed by Dr. Alia Bouran, on Sunday, discussed with the Russian ambassador to Jordan, Gleb Desyatnikov, ways to develop bilateral relations.

Bouran said Jordan, under leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II, is “steadily” pushing efforts to develop its parliamentary life and activate the role of its political parties, by updating a new electoral law, which would empower women’s role in political participation.

Bouran also highlighted the importance of building on and developing the existing Jordanian-Russian relations on the economic, political and educational levels, stressing the importance of increasing joint trade exchange.

Voicing the two countries’ interest in reaching peace to Middle East issues, she lauded Russia’s “firm” stance towards the Palestinian cause, the two-state solution and the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem’s Islamic holy sites.

The envoy, for his part, stressed the “deep-rooted, strong and historic” relations between the two countries, stressing the importance of bilateral ties at all trade and economic levels, calling for intensifying mutual visits to benefit and exchange expertise in various fields.

The diplomat also referred to his country’s “firm” stance towards solving the Palestinian issue, and its efforts to find peace to the Middle East issues.

In turn, the committee’s members stressed the importance of strengthening bilateral relations by developing cooperation in the cultural, commercial, medical and educational fields.
