Senate panel, Chinese envoy discuss enhanced cooperation

The Senate Jordanian-Chinese Friendship Committee discussed on Wednesday, with the Chinese Ambassador to Jordan, Chen Chuandong, ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields.

The Committee’s head, Senator Issa Murad, said His Majesty King Abdullah II has played a “major” role in strengthening Jordanian-Chinese relations in all fields, which contributed to stimulating and consolidating bilateral ties in all social, educational and economic areas.

Murad also lauded the shared stances in political positions on Arab and international issues to push the Middle East peace process, stressing the importance of bilateral relations in the economic and commercial field.

Jordan is “a gateway” to the Arab world and European and American markets, due to its trade relations and agreements, which make the Kingdom an “attractive” hub for mutual investments, according to Murad.

Jordan, he said, imports 20% of its needs from the Chinese market, despite the challenges facing maritime shipping operations, stressing the need to work on expanding Jordanian-Chinese investments in the Kingdom, which would contribute to creating jobs for Jordanians.

The envoy, for his part, valued the Kingdom’s role, under the Hashemites’ leadership, over the past century, which has “always been keen to open all doors of dialogue to reach a just and comprehensive peace in the region.”

Jordan, Chuandong said, enjoys a geographical location as an “open gateway” to the European and African continent and the rest of the Asian countries.

The Kingdom is also an oasis of security and stability within a “turbulent” region, which qualifies it to be a destination for Chinese investors to expand trade exchanges and enhance friendship in all fields, according to the envoy.

China, he noted, seeks to enhance cultural and educational cooperation through partnerships with various educational, training and professional institutions in the public and private sectors, to train workers and provide educational exchange opportunities for students and faculty, driven by the increasing number of Jordanians wishing to learn the Chinese language.

The committee’s members praised bilateral relations in the educational, cultural and social sectors, and the shared stances towards the region’s conflicts.

The senators also called for the need to find a “conclusive” solution to the suspended Jordanian students at Chinese universities, due to the Covid-19 pandemic..
