Senate legal panel declines MPs’ deadline to rectify political parties’ status

The Senate’s Legal Committee on Thursday approved the draft political parties’ law, as received from the Lower House of Representatives, with an amendment on clause (40).

In a committee meeting, headed by Ahmed Tabishat, the senators approved the ultimatum’s original formula sent from the government, which gives the existing parties a 1-year period to rectify their conditions after the law takes effect, according to its press statement.

Earlier, the House approved 1.5-period to help Jordan’s political parties align their status with the new law provisions.

If a given party fails to adjust its status, by holding a general assembly that fulfills the founding conference conditions, as per the new law, otherwise the party is dissolved, the law reads.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs, Musa Maaitah, the Minister of State for Legal Affairs, Wafa’a Bani Mustafa, and legal experts.
