Ramallah: The Senate Palestine Committee, chaired by Mazen Darwazeh, has "strongly" condemned the Israeli occupation forces' raid on Birzeit University in Ramallah.
According to Jordan News Agency, the committee issued a statement describing the raid as a blatant attack on the sanctity of educational institutions, labeling it a crime within a systematic policy against the Palestinian people and their right to education, security, and a dignified life.
The committee highlighted the adverse impacts of the raid, stating that the act resulted in wounding several students by bullets and shrapnel, with dozens suffering from tear gas inhalation.
The senators emphasized that attacks on Palestinian universities reflect the occupying government's insistence on undermining the foundations of Palestinian society, violating international laws that ban attacks on educational facilities.
The committee further stated that this attack constitutes a grave breach of the Geneva Conventions and relevant UN resolutions, reaffirming Israel's continued aggressive policies with disregard for international law, exploiting international silence and the impunity enjoyed by the occupying power.
The senators called on the international community, including the United Nations, the Security Council, and relevant international organizations, to take "concrete and binding" measures to protect Palestinian educational institutions.
Moreover, the lawmakers urged holding the occupying authorities accountable for their repeated crimes and halting violations that threaten peace, stability, and the prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace.
