Security Council convenes on Iraq

New York, The UN Security Council Thursday held a session on the situation in Iraq, during which the gathering was briefed by the Special Representative and Head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.

Plasschaert said the challenges facing Iraq “did not appear overnight,” adding that there is no government capable of solving all problems. She urged political parties and other actors to prioritise the country’s interest over all others.

Speakers commended the appointment of three women to the Iraqi Cabinet, noting the need to combat corruption, tackle unemployment and enhance security in the country.

In turn, Chargé d’Affairs of the Iraqi mission, Sarhad Fatah, outlined the Iraqi government’s priorities, noting that they are based on international partnerships and focus on transparency, holding early elections, combating corruption, enacting reforms, combating poverty and unemployment, combating inflation and improving production.
