Second National Media, Information Literacy Strategy Launched in Partnership with UNESCO

Amman: The Ministry of Government Communication has initiated the second National Strategy for Media and Information Literacy, in collaboration with the Institute and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

According to Jordan News Agency, the strategy was launched under the patronage of Princess Rym Ali, founder of the Jordan Media Institute. It aims to bolster institutional and human capacities, incorporate media and information literacy into national policies, and bridge digital and knowledge gaps by enhancing critical thinking and responsible engagement with digital and media content.

Minister of Government Communication Mohammad Momani stated that this launch signifies a significant milestone in Jordan's mission to combat misinformation and encourage informed and responsible interaction with information. He emphasized that the strategy builds upon previous achievements and aligns with international best practices, particularly those set by UNESCO.

Momani highlighted Jordan's transition to UNESCO's "Scenario Four," where media and information literacy becomes a fundamental component of public policy, education, and daily life. He affirmed the government's unwavering support for the strategy's implementation and expressed gratitude for Princess Rym Ali's ongoing support and UNESCO's technical and knowledge-based assistance.

Dana Shaqam, CEO of the Jordan Media Institute, noted that the strategy addresses global challenges such as the spread of misinformation, the intricacies of the media landscape, and the impact of AI and emerging technologies. She emphasized the Institute's ongoing efforts in promoting media literacy and its role in developing national frameworks and action plans.

UNESCO Representative to Jordan Nuha Bawazir reiterated UNESCO's dedication to fostering media and information literacy in Jordan, commending the country's regional leadership and the strong partnership with national entities in formulating the 2026-2029 strategy.

The launch event included a panel discussion focusing on the integration of media and information literacy into public policy and education.
