Safadi, Canada senate speaker reiterate importance of Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem

Amman: Lower House Speaker, Ahmad Safadi, on Wednesday discussed with Canada Senate Speaker George Furey, and his accompanying delegation, ways to strengthen bilateral relations in all fields, especially joint parliamentary cooperation.

During the meeting, Safadi said Jordanian-Canadian relations are “deep-rooted and longstanding,” adding that the two countries share common positions, and mutual keenness to maintain joint coordination and cooperation.

His Majesty King Abdullah II visited Canada less than a month ago, the sixth trip of His Majesty to Ottawa since he assumed his constitutional powers in 1999, which reflects the “solid” bilateral relations, Safadi said.

Safadi stressed the importance of developing joint trade relations and opportunities to enhance commercial and investment cooperation.

Regionally, he expressed Jordan’s appreciation for Canad’s positions in all fields, especially its support for the two-state solution and its continuous endeavors to achieve a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East and stop all unilateral and provocative measures that undermine the two-state solution.

He also noted Jordan “remarkably” values Canada’s positions in support of Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem’s Islamic and Christian holy sites, noting the importance of preserving the holy city’s historical status and its sanctities.

Referring to “deep” Jordanian-Canadian partnership in war on terrorism file, he stressed importance of maintaining this effort to combat extremism and terrorism and continuing to participate in the international coalition against ISIS to ensure its final defeat.

In this regard, Safadi noted war on terrorism requires effort to confront this phenomenon militarily, intellectually, culturally and socially.

For his part, Furey stressed the “deep-rooted, historic” bilateral relations, adding that His Majesty King Abdullah II made multiple visits to Canada, during which he met officials and stressed need for joint cooperation in various fields, especially spreading peace, combating terrorism, and expanding trade exchange, which “greatly” helped to strengthen relations.

Canadians stress the need to find a peaceful and just solution to the Palestinian cause, he said, stressing his country’s support for the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem’s holy sites.

Furey said Jordan provides “key and costly” support to Syrian refugees and others, as the Kingdom provides education, health and other forms of a decent life for them, despite its limited resources and challenges, lauding Jordan’s efforts in this regard.

He pointed to importance of constantly working to strengthen ties and increase mutual trade and economic cooperation to serve common interests.
