Renewable energy companies urged to push social responsibility forward

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh has urged renewable energy companies to take a headway role in social responsibility by working toward reducing unemployment and poverty in their areas of operation.

In a meeting on Tuesday with representatives of 24 renewable energy companies, Kharabsheh stressed the need to constitute a specific mechanism for companies to engage in development efforts and improve economic opportunities for local communities.

“Institutionalizing the support of local communities under a “fund” managed by the companies themselves will maximize efforts to improve the standard of living of the local community,” he added, pointing to the importance of involving the locals in the development process to guarantee that support reaches the target groups and regions.

The minister indicated that the “Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund” may currently be utilized as an incubator for the social responsibility initiative until a general framework is agreed upon, either by establishing a non-profit foundation or any flexible structure managed by the companies, the ministry and the local community.
