Rainfall raises dams storage to 71mcm in last 24 hours

Amman, Some 23.5 million cubic meters (mcm) were channeled into Wala Dam and Mujib Dam in the past 24 hours, raising the total amount in Jordan’s dams to 71.1mcm (23.5 percent) of their total capacity of 280.760mcm.

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Wednesday said the recent rainfall supplied Wala and Mujib dams with 12.5mcm and 10mcm, respectively, increasing their storage to 12.625 (50.3 percent) and 13.582 (55 percent).

Precipitation also increased to 37.4 percent, constituting 47 percent of Jordan’s long-term annual average rainfall of 8.1bcm compared to 20.8 percent in the same period of last year, the ministry indicated. The highest downpour during the last 24 hours was recorded in Madaba’s Khan al Zabib (45 millimeters).

On the governorate level, Amman witnessed the highest rainfall of 12.1 millimeters (mm), followed by Zarqa with 5.5mm, Madaba with 5mm, Balqa with 4.6mm, Jerash with 4.1mm, Karak with 4mm, Mafraq with 2mm, Tafileh with 1.9mm, Ma’an with 0.7mm, and Aqaba with 0.3mm.
